Budget Travel Guide to Belarus

The welcoming and generous people of Belarus disguise the sad history of this rewarding country. Stalin, Nazi occupation and Chernobyl have all left their scars, however those days have gone (apart from some Chernobyl residue) and Belarus has much to offer the traveller on a budget.

Budget Accommodation in Belarus

There are no youth hostels in Belarus so hotels and private apartment rentals are the only options. Staying in a hotel at least one night is a good idea as you'll have to register your visa. Expect to pay more for accommodation as a foreigner.

A Travellers Budget for Belarus

Buying fresh fruit and veg from street vendors is cheaper, and tastier, than buying them from a shop. Buses are cheaper and more frequent to travel between towns but the trains are pretty inexpensive too and have great views, try the route from Minsk to Brest or back. Allow about USD50 per day.

Cheap Activities for Budget Travellers

-Go to the Ballet, it costs next to nothing and is said to be as good as you'd find in somewhere like Moscow.
-Check out the Kupalye festival in July or the Music Festival at the end of November
-Visit the Museum of the Great Patriotic War for some brutal realism
-The Brest Fortress has free admission, it was here that the locals held off the invading Germans for a month in 1941.
-Have a wander past the KGB headquarters in Minsk
-Walk along Minsk's main thoroughfare, Praspekt Francyska Skaryny, to get a feel for the old USSR and Stalin's vision.
