There are some cheap hotels around in the towns in Belize, camping is allowed on designated sites which are growing in number al the time or stay in a Mayan village and inject some cash into a community.
A Traveller's Budget for Belize
The public transport system in Belize is bus, and they're ex US school buses so don't expect too much comfort. You should buy your ticket before you et on tomake sure you've paid the correct fare. The bus routes don't cover many rural areas though, you might have to get a lift if you're keen on exploring these.
Eating cheaply in Belize is pretty straightforward, the staple is rice and beans which you could get by on alone, otherwise you can get it with some king of meat or vegetables. Burritos available from stallholders in markets are usually excellent.
Overal the costs in Belize are slightly higher than in the neighbouring countries but you should be able to get by on around US$30 a day.
