Budget Guide to Brunei

It's only a small country, but it's rich due to its own supply of oil, so it's not anything like as cheap as neighbouring nations. The country is strictly Islam, as is 70% of the population, so there is no alcohol but the mosques are something to behold and the people friendly and sure of themselves, and immensely proud of their country.

Budget Accommodation in Brunei

You're kidding, right? There is one youth hostel, in Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), so it's a cheap hotel for you my friend. Relatively cheap, that is.

A Traveler's Budget for Brunei

Thankfully it's easier to eat cheaply than it is to sleep cheaply in Brunei. You can fill up at the night markets or use the food courts and cafes for a filling budget feed.

To get around the capital you can catch a bus but bear in mind they stop running in the early evening. Alternatively take a water taxi, they operate at night too. Transport is limited throughout the rest of the country, it's best to hire a car for which you'll need an international driver's permit. It's pretty easy to hitch but remember its inherent risks and the culture particularly for girls.

Activities

You can check out the museums and mosques in BSB

Have a laugh at the Jerudong Park Playground, an amusement park in need of upgrading but still with some decent rides

Chill out at the beach at Pantai Muara and Pantai Serasa, you can get there by bus from the capital.

Go hiking in the Peradayan Forest Reserve, it's free to get into and you can get to it from the capital by boat.
