Easter Island is the most south easterly point in Polynesia and is incredibly isolated. Famous for its mysterious statues, or moai, it remains sparsely populated and unspoilt.

There is a free camping ground at Anakena and in Hanga Roa, the capital, there is an HI afilliated guest house which includes breakfast in the price.

A Traveller's Budget for Easter Island

It's possible to walk around the island in a few days, such is it's size, or you can rent a bike, car or motorbike from Hanga Roa. A cheaper option is to rent a horse. Cheap food is a little sparse but you can pick up pizza, empanadas or fresh bread and cheese reasonably cheaply. There's also a supermarket in Hanga Roa if you want to self cater.

Activities on Easter Island

-Rent a car or a motorbike and explore the Northeast Circuit which includes Anekana with its row of moai, Ahu te Pito Kura and Ahu Tongariki the village sites, and Rano Raraku, the volcano from which the statues were cut.

-Visit Orongo, the ceremonial village associated with the bird cult of the 18th and 19th centuries

-Go surfing off Motu Hava, a short distance from Hanga Roa by foot, there is a board rental place in town

-Diving off the coast will require your certification or you can opt to go snorkelling instead.
