Budget Travel Guide to Peru

It's Inca Central here, although there were people building a civilisation in this land even before that. But it is for the Incas and their incredible architecture and culture that this country is best known. If that's not why you're here, it must be for the mountains, the surfing, or any number of outdoor adventures. Or is it the nightlife of Lima?

Budget Accommodation in Peru

The term Hostal in Peru refers only to the fact that it has less than 50 rooms and is no indication of quality or cost. Youth hostels do exist though if you don't want to stay in a cheap hotel, you can get a list from the Asociación Peruana de Albergues Turísticos Juveniles. Otherwise you can camp wherever you like pretty much but keep an eye on your gear.

A Traveller's Budget for Peru

The bus network is extensive and generally good, with the usual variety of quality and comfort proportional to the price of the ticket. You might get a discount if you have some kind of under 26 card, and you should always take a blanket and some water if travelling through the mountains. For the places the buses don't go you can travel by collectivo, which will be a minibus on rougher roads or a car on better quality roads. The cost is about double that of a bus.

If you want to fill up for less do it at lunchtime, this is when the main meal of the day is eaten. Look out for cheap restaurants offering set menus - menu ejecutivo or menu economico - which will only set you back two or three dollars. Otherwise you could try the Chinese...
